Australian man, 48, tragically dies on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea after desperate attempts to resuscitate him

An Australian has died while hiking the historic Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

The 48-year-old reportedly passed out while walking and his companions immediately performed CPR.

He was then rushed to Pacific International Hospital in the capital, Port Moresby, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The local police are investigating.

The Kokoda Track Authority, which manages the site, told the ABC that Adventure Kokoda had contacted them about the incident.

April is one of the busiest times for visitors on the trail – which winds 60 miles (96 km) through dense jungle – as it includes the build-up to Anzac Day.

Though considered one of the world’s toughest hikes, thousands take on the challenge each year to follow in the footsteps of Australian soldiers who fought against the Japanese in World War II.
