An Australian businessman has been arrested and remains in custody in the south of France as police investigate the suspected attempted murder of his Russian-born wife.
Damien Carew lived with Anna Polianskaya-Carew and their two children in a rented villa in La Turbie, just north of the affluent city-state of Monaco on the French Riviera.
Local media reports that Carew, 43, who is believed to be originally from Melbourne, called emergency services on Wednesday following an incident involving his wife.
She had lost consciousness and is in a coma while Carew is in custody and their children are in the care of her family, English language news website NEWS.MC reports.

According to news.mc, Carew had recently served several months in prison and was under “judicial scrutiny” in connection with a money laundering case.
Ms. Polianskaya-Carew, 33, worked as a brand manager at the Stardust boutique in the luxurious Hotel de Paris in Monaco, her Linkedin profile reports.
Carew is described as a real estate agent and the pair were directors of Sterling Estates International, previously registered as a company in London and Monaco.
The Monaco-Matin According to the newspaper, the family’s villa is partly hidden behind a thick hedge and at the end of a dead end road.

Neighbors said they had not heard anything on the day of the alleged incident, but confirmed that police had visited the house, which had been sealed with tape at the crime scene.
Prosecutors had opened an investigation into attempted murder with aggravated circumstances and intentional violence against a spouse.
Monaco-Matin reported that Carew was represented by a Paris lawyer when he appeared before a judge who ordered that he be detained.
The outlet also reports that Carew’s company has been placed in forced liquidation.
