Australian is arrested in paradise after Interpol warrant was issued after he allegedly fled the country while charged with rape

An Australian rape suspect has been arrested in Thailand after he reportedly fled Australia while facing charges.

Helio Taiyang Richardson, 62, was arrested at a resort on the idyllic island of Koh Phangan in the south-east of the country.

Thai police released video footage of the moment Richardson was arrested and shown to the media.

Kinesiologist Richardson was charged with rape in Queensland in 2018.

He reportedly left Australia before the trial began in 2022.

He has since been extradited to Sydney and will travel back to Queensland from there.

Queensland Police confirmed they are working with Thai authorities to extradite a 62-year-old man.
