Australia weather: Melbourne, Tasmania so see the coldest Summer day in 16 years

The winter flurry will bring SNOW and the coldest summer day in 16 years to two Australian states. So how frosty will it be in your city?

  • The temperature will vary greatly from state to state in the coming days.
  • One city is likely to see snow on a nearby mountain, but others will hit 30C
  • But another major city is headed for its coldest summer day since 2006.

Snow will fall in Tasmania and Melbourne may experience its coldest summer day in more than 15 years as a low pressure system sweeps across the south of the nation.

The weather pattern means a miserable week is ahead for residents of ACT, Victoria and Tasmania, except for those near Mt Wellington who are craving some festive season snow.

Snow showers are possible at Hobart’s famous landmark through Thursday as minimum temperatures drop as low as -1C.

Sky News Weather Meteorologist Alison Osborne said temperatures would plummet on Apple Isle by mid-week.

“Winds will ease but it will remain cool with a high chance of showers through Saturday,” he said.

The mercury could dip to 9°C in Melbourne on Wednesday morning, making it the city’s coldest summer day for at least 16 years, Osborne said.

She said the wind chill would make temperatures feel even colder, but the weekend would bring better partly cloudy conditions with temperatures in the 20s.

Canberrans will experience even lower single-digit temperatures than their southern neighbors this week, with a low of 3C forecast for Thursday.

“It will break 20C on Friday, but keep the extra layers close, because those mornings are still unusually cold for this time of year,” said Ms Osborne.

Sydney will avoid the worst of the low pressure system, with conditions forecast to remain “mild and generally clear” through the weekend, where there is a moderate chance of showers on both Saturday and Sunday, Ms Osborne said.

The maximum temperatures will remain stable around 23ºC during the week.

A band of storms continues to linger near Brisbane and it is “highly likely” to strike before a cold turn, Ms Osborne said.

“There is still a chance of quite dangerous thunderstorms in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and even the Gold Coast,” he said.

Some warm sunny days later in the week will give way to some light showers and cloudiness on Saturday in the Queensland capital.

It will go back to business as usual in Darwin in the wake of its blistering heat wave.

Classic rainy season conditions have taken hold, with thunderstorms forecast for the entire week with temperatures ranging from 30 to 34°C.

Perth will be hot and dry with highs around 30C for the next seven days, after Tuesday brought overcast conditions with some scattered showers.

Perfect weekend weather is forecast to hit Adelaide once its current cold front has passed, but then there will be a “little chance of rain next Monday,” Ms Osborne said.

After possible showers on Tuesday, it should be fairly dry in Adelaide for the rest of the week with highs in the low 20s.
