The Royal Australian Mint has celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Bathurst 1000 with the launch of a special 50 cent coin for next weekend’s race.

A number of special celebrations and tributes will take place during the Great Race, as Bathurst marks its sixty-year milestone.

A colored, uncirculated 50 shipped 2023 coin was created, designed by Lydia Ashe. It features six cars, one for each decade, that swing across the top of Mount Panorama.

The coin was launched this week by Australian racing driver Cameron Hill at the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra.

“It’s exciting to be involved in the launch of such a special coin,” Hill said.

‘Bathurst has always played a big role in my racing career, from watching the race on TV as a child to making my debut last year.

‘The Great Race has an incredible amount of history and it is very fitting to see some of that reflected in our currency as we celebrate its 60th anniversary this year.

“I’m really looking forward to hitting the Mountain grid in October aboard the Matt Stone Racing Chevrolet Camaro.”

The coin is both a collector’s item and legal tender. It can be purchased at the Mint Shop or through one of the Mint’s authorized dealers.

“The Bathurst 1000 is the ultimate battleground, where a 1000km endurance race on an unforgiving mountainous circuit can be won and lost on the final lap,” said Royal Australian Mint CEO Leigh Gordon.

‘With corner names such as Hell Corner, The Cutting and The Esses, it is not difficult to imagine why Bathurst is regarded by many as one of the world’s most legendary and challenging racing circuits.

“The Bathurst 1000 has earned its place in Australian history, and I am pleased that the Mint has chosen to recognize this with a coin.”
