Aussie’s cheeky response on Voice ballot paper at early voting centre
Brazen Aussie response to Voice ballot at early polling station
An Australian woman has made a cheeky move as she voted early for the Voice referendum.
The voter visited an early voting center and was given a ballot before being taken to a polling booth.
They shared footage of the stunt on TikTok with the video showing the voter filling in the small box on the ballot.
The paper instructs the voter to write “Yes” or “No” in the box.
One voter decided to take the instructions on the Vote for Parliament referendum literally and wrote the voting instructions ‘Yes’ OR ‘No’ (pictured) in the box.
The person takes the instructions literally and writes the phrase ‘”Yes” or “No” in the box.
Social media users had fun with the stunt, as many found the lighter side of the act.
“Nice vote yes,” said one user.
“That’s a yes HAHA,” wrote another.
‘Brother took it literally’
One user pointed out that the voter had misread the instructions in their answer to the question.
“It didn’t say write ‘Yes or No’.” Write “Yes” or “No,” they wrote.
Others criticized the voter’s response, saying it won’t count when all the votes are counted after Australians cast their ballots on Saturday.
“Well done now your vote is meaningless anyway,” wrote one.
“This will be counted as an invalid vote,” writes another.
“If the vote is not a clear yes or no, it will not be counted, as it is an informal/donkey vote!”
The SEC states in its official guide to the Voice referendum that voters should follow the instructions included on the ballot.
This means that voters must indicate whether they approve the constitutional amendment by either voting Yes or No.
Voters who have the right to vote in the referendum must indicate whether they approve of the constitutional amendment by writing Yes or No on the ballot (pictured) where the CEC counts only votes that clearly indicate an answer to the proposed referendum question.
Voters who agree with the proposed change should write ‘Yes’ and voters who do not approve the change should write ‘No’.
The person who uploaded the TikTok video in response said they were simply following the instructions on the ballot which they believed were unclear.
‘Just doing as I’m told. They should get lawyers to design ballots that are easier to understand,” they said.
Saturday marks the official day to vote in the Zeri referendum, however early voting began on October 2.
