Aussie tourist told to leave Japan over disrespectful act on public transport: ‘It is unforgivable’
An Australian tourist has been told to ‘leave Japan immediately’ after committing an unforgivable act on public transport.
Former sheep farmer turned travel blogger Turan William Salis was criticized online after sharing a video of himself boarding a women-only train carriage.
The 20-year-old joked that he was a carriage inspector and checked the area for men violating the safe space.
But he also admitted that he was taken back to a women-only section in such a progressive society.
“Japan was the last place I expected to see strict segregation between men and women in public,” he wrote alongside the video.
“(It) reminds me of something I would see in a country with strict segregation rules,” he added.
But people were quick to condemn the 20-year-old for breaking the rules.
“This is creepy,” one woman wrote.
“Not only did he go in, but he acted like he was in a position of authority over them?” Absolutely insane,” one man said.
“Why are you offended that women have their own space?” a third added.
The women on the train seemed very uncomfortable with the presence of Turan, who also goes by Spidey.
And locals online were just as dissatisfied.
“At this point, this man needs to go back to his country. He is not welcome in Japan.’
“Leave my country now, we don’t want you,” fired another.
A third said they hope police reprimand him for his actions, or that customs officials see the videos and stop letting him in.
Turan denounced the use of female-only carriages as segregation before boarding them
Australians were also quick to condemn him for the disrespectful decision.
‘He is an attention-seeking idiot who has embarrassed his country. Stop defending his assholes,” one man said.
“He cannot possibly understand why women have to be separated from men in a room with little to no exit when they are moving. piece of shit,” one woman added
While others tried to defend him by explaining that he doesn’t handle social cues well.
“He was there for about ten seconds and he has autism, who cares,” one man said.
“He was joking, lighten up,” another added.
A Japanese man who posts videos under elcafejapones edited the video together to explain why jumping into the carriage was so insensitive.
The man, who no longer lives in Japan and describes himself as critical of the country, criticized the Australian.
He explained that the carriages are a safe space for women and said that there are a lot of creepy men living in Japan who try to take photos under women’s skirts, especially on crowded trains.
‘There has also been a lot of physical intimidation. It was a very serious issue,” he said.
“And now you dare to call it segregation, you know nothing about my country and you just go there and have no intention of respecting our culture or rules.
But people from Japan weren’t really impressed with Turan’s video
‘I can’t believe this behaviour. The world doesn’t revolve around you.’
The former farmer has made headlines since arriving in the conservative Asian country.
He was cited by police for walking around without a shirt, which while not illegal, is frowned upon and culturally insensitive.
He also petted dogs at a dog cafe despite signs asking him not to touch the animals, and filmed performers despite often being asked not to.
Tarun has admitted that times have been tough in Japan – saying the country is very expensive and very different from what he expected.
He even revealed that he slept rough to save money on the trip, noting that he usually didn’t do it too many nights in a row.
Turan’s video on the train has been viewed more than 2.4 million times and received 28,000 comments.
