Aussie star produces LeBron James leap to take ‘catch of the year’ contender… before having a ‘very important’ discussion with English batter

Glenn Maxwell defied gravity on Wednesday night to grab an early catch of the year.

The Melbourne Stars would claim a five-wicket win over the Brisbane Heat, thanks in part to Maxwell’s moment of brilliance at the Gabba.

The Stars have had a torrid start to the season, losing all five of their opening games, but quite literally got their 2025 off to a flying start.

Despite being dismissed for a duck himself, Maxwell demonstrated his acrobatic skills by leaping high into the air to prevent Will Prestwidge’s monster six from crossing the boundary.

The former Aussie Test star, who was over the boundary when he first made contact with the ball, sent the stadium into delirium, throwing the ball back into the air and over the boundary before recovering the ball.

While there have been plenty of special catches at the Big Bash this summer, including a duo of spectacular shots from Jordan Silk earlier this week, commentators were baffled at this point, comparing Maxwell, 36, to LeBron James.

“How about this from Maxwell,” said the Fox Cricket commentator.

“Unbelievable, we’ve seen some incredible things this summer, but that’s the catch of the year.

“Maxwell like LeBron James!”

Another commentator went so far as to say: ‘That’s the best catch I’ve ever seen in the Big Bash.’

Fans have taken note of Maxwell’s reaction to X’s catch, with one writing: ‘It’s the fact that he’s so nonchalant about it.’

“Excellent,” said another, someone said, “Take a bow!”

Maxwell would impressively take four catches in the match, also dismissing Tom Banton, Matt Renshaw and Paul Walter.

But there was a bizarre moment early in the innings when Maxwell, who was at the microphone, asked Ben Duckett and Sam Harper to stand back to back after a ‘very important discussion’.

He revealed that the team had discussed putting Duckett on second slip, but jokingly had some reservations about the ball flying over his head.

“We were trying to decide who would be a slip,” he told Channel 7.

‘Duckling [Duckett] said, “Yes, I did some slipping.”

‘But I was like, “Mate at the Gabba, they’ll probably go over your head.”

Duckett could be heard replying, “That’s a low blow!”

Standing between Duckett and Harper, Maxwell added, “Tell you what I feel immensely next to these two.”

He was asked who was the taller of the pair, before saying, “Duckett wears platforms, so I guess they’re harps.”

The debate continued with Maxwell hilariously calling on Duckett and Harper to stand back to back.

He then decided that Duckett was the taller of the pair.

Brisbane would post a score of 149-7, with Max Bryant hitting an unbeaten 77.

But the Stars had outclassed their opponents in the opening innings, with Dan Lawrence and captain Marcus Stoinis both hitting 64 and 62 respectively to seal the win, while Duckett, who opened the batting, was dismissed for a duck.
