Aussie Olympic athletes will be protected from potential drone strikes as they compete for medals and potential cyber threats at next year’s Paris Games thanks to beefed-up security.
It comes after French officials recently expressed fears over the possibility of climate activists and anti-government protesters disrupting the Games.
Anna Meares, Australia’s Chef de Mission for Paris 2024, affirmed that the safety of athletes is a top priority.
Meares, a cyclist who won an Olympic gold medal in 2004 and 2012, also stated that the team will be monitored by a member of the Australian Federal Police at all times.
It’s because the French capital has recently endured civil unrest, and they’re not taking any chances when it comes to any individual or group looking to hijack the Games, which start on July 26 next year.

According to News Corpthe French government has outlined plans to deploy 35,000 security guards and the army to ensure the opening ceremony and all sporting events run smoothly afterwards.
“Certainly speaking to our member sports, safety is one of the biggest issues they raise,” said Meares.
“We feel that France and the Paris Games Organizing Committee will ensure a safe Games for all participants.
The Australian Olympic team will have a member of the AFP [Australian Federal Police] as well as private security to ensure our teams are safe while there.”
Meares added that she knows firsthand that safety is of “paramount importance” after competing in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
They were the first Games to be staged since the 9/11 attack in the US three years earlier, with terrorism at the forefront of many people at the time.
The development comes as criticism continues to mount over the AOC’s decision that athletes be sent home from Paris immediately after they finish their competition.
Other concerns raised include the removal of air conditioning from the athletes’ village and the stifling heat predicted during the competition.
