Aussie footy legend roasted by two-time major winner Bubba Watson over his golf technique as LIV Adelaide enjoys record opening day crowd

Richmond great Matthew Richardson was an incredible AFL player but his golf swing may need more work after he was roasted live on air by two-time Majors champion Bubba Watson.

Richardson scored 800 goals in 282 games and worked on the commentary desk during the Port Adelaide vs. St Kilda at Adelaide Oval.

Here, two-time Masters winner and former world number 2 Bubba Watson, who was in Adelaide for a LIV Golf event, was invited to assess Richardson’s golf swing.

Watson was shown a video of Richardson missing the ball on a drive attempt and was asked for tips on how to improve Richardson’s technique.

“Oh wow,” Watson replies.

“Where did he go wrong?” Brayshaw asks.

“He missed the ball, that’s first and foremost,” replied the 45-year-old American.

“But man, he looks athletic getting ready for it.”

“The setup is good, Bubba,” you hear Richo say in the background with a big smile on his face.

“The intent was there,” Watson agreed. “It looked like the ball was going to go for miles.

“And then it didn’t go anywhere.”

Watson had played a first round score of two under par 70 at The Grange earlier that day, with his team, RangeGoats GC, finishing in sixth place in the LIV competition.

The LIV Adelaide event at The Grange attracted an impressive crowd of more than 35,000 people on its record-breaking opening day, as planning is already underway to accommodate even more spectators.

Among the players, Cam Smith and two other Australians excelled, contributing to a field where 72 percent shot under par, marking the lowest combined LIV score this year.

Unexpectedly in the lead was Japan’s Jinichiro Kozuma, ranked 545th worldwide, with a nine-under 63, reflecting the high score across the board with 263 birdies and a total of 141 under for the field.

This performance was significantly better compared to last year’s opening day of 60 shots.

Despite skepticism about the depth of the LIV squad, the high quality of play was undeniable, highlighted by a significant number of birdies.

Carlos Ortiz, who is in second place with an eight-under 64, said course conditions were conducive to aggressive play.

Early rain changed the course conditions, making it easier for the players, with almost all scoring under par. However, Australian Lucas Herbert struggled with a one-over 73.

Smith, amid huge support, started slowly but finished at four under, five shots behind Kozuma.

His team, Ripper GC, performed well and finished fifth in the team leadership, driven by their ambition to win, backed by extensive preparation.

Some of the exciting moments of the event included an eagle from Abraham Ancer, which added to the excitement.

With an expected attendance of almost 100,000 over three days, surpassing last year’s total, the 2025 LIV Adelaide event is set to become even bigger and become one of the most anticipated events of the LIV season.
