Thousands online are sharing the popular food and drink they believe people are just pretending to enjoy from kale to kombucha and dishes decorated with gold flakes.

A post on Reddit asked the question “What food do you swear people just pretend they like?” attracting over 37,200 responses.

Entries covered a range of food trends that had swept social media, including kombucha, pizza cones, “sandwiches” that replace bread with lettuce, overnight oats and burgers topped with melted cheese.

Divisive foods like oysters, kale, caviar, mushrooms, and olives were also on the list, as were some old favorites like beer, turkey, grapefruit, and coffee.

Stunt food on Instagram. Pizza cones, Birria meat Ramen, and of course when they drown a hamburger, and I mean waterboard, with melted cheese,” one Redditor wrote.

“All those keto replacement foods. Use your imagination as much as you want, but lettuce wraps will never taste as good as a real sandwich with bread,” says another.

‘Gold leaf – need I say more?’ suggested a third to which a fourth agreed: ‘It has no real taste – it is there to make you feel rich and straight’.

One foodie said they hate fondant on wedding cakes because it tastes “cheap and cardboard-like,” and a second wasn’t convinced by the recent trend to make overnight oats.

‘Mushrooms!! Like, it’s a joke right? People don’t really enjoy this s****, it’s an elaborate joke being played on me, yes?’ asked one.

“People will say, ‘I love grapefruit,’ and then dump enough sugar on it to lose a foot,” said another.

‘I don’t really understand the hype for avocados. What about that? It doesn’t taste like anything and doesn’t have a good consistency. What do people like about it?’ a third wondered.

‘Cauliflower. It has no taste and feels like you’re eating bits of rubber,” said a fourth.

There were also a number of beloved or trendy liquids and drinks that people hated, including sparkling water, kombucha, and black coffee.

“Dude, coconut water is the worst and I don’t know how anyone can actually enjoy it. That’s how I imagine the water after a pedicure would taste,” one joked.

“Vodka … it tastes like the walls of a hospital,” said a second, while a third added, “Kombucha. It smells like acid reflux.”
