Aussie cricketer Darren Berry claims Pat Cummins will step down as skipper after the Ashes as he blows up tourists’ ‘unwatchable’ play in fourth Test
- Astonishing claim from respected coach unfounded
- His tweet set Twitter on fire
- Many fans offer alternatives if Cummins leaves
Former Victorian cricket captain turned sports commentator Darren Berry has rocked the twitter world with an extraordinary claim that Aussie Test skipper Pat Cummins is about to resign.
His tweet came as he made some scathing attacks on the tourists’ bowling attack, which struggled heavily as England worked their way to a first innings total of 592 at Old Trafford on the third day of the fourth Test.
Berry wrote a tweet to Australian fast bowling legend Merv Hughes saying: ‘Here’s my take. Pat Cummins is undoubtedly a great cricketer, but remember this post. He will resign as captain after the Ashes series. The question is, will they go back to Smudge or will they move on to Head of Marsh? Ashton Turner T20.’
Prominent broadcaster Jim Wilson responded, “Think it’s time to move on. Go to mine and get Cummins back to doing what it does best. Tactically this has been a horror show for us, all credit to England and we don’t deserve to be saved by Mother Nature!’
Under fire, Pat Cummins has been attacked by many on social media following his tactical errors in the Fourth Test, with Victorian captain Darren Berry sensationally claiming the Aussie skipper will resign
Berry (pictured) has left tongues loose on social media with his blistering attack on the captain and Australia’s disastrous play at Old Trafford
Berry had previously tweeted, “This is unwatchable. Good night to all the lovers of the game of our great game of cricket. This is absolutely insane for anyone watching this shit with half a clue about the game. Enough is enough, keep popping ’em guys WTF.’
At stumps, the Aussies slogged 4-113, trailing the home side by 162 runs and praying the predicted rain would save them from a humbling defeat.
A debate raged over which member of the Aussie squad would be a better captain if Berry’s prediction came true.
Former skipper Steve Smith had fans and detractors, while Travis Head and Pat Carey also loomed as plausible candidates.
One fan wrote: ‘Cummins should concentrate on his bowling and leave the captaincy duties to someone else. His placements on the field and this short bullshit stink of someone who has no clue.’
Another added: “Are they aware of the ECB [English Cricket Board] to make sure it goes to a fifth test decider? Hard to imagine how professional players can come up with such clumsy strategies.’
Merv Hughes, a big tweeter, responded curtly to Berry, “I thought you were going to bed.”
Berry’s tweet sparked speculation from cricket fans about which member of the Aussie team could take over from Cummins
Aussie great and fellow fast bowler Merv Hughes got engaged to Berry on Twitter as they both watched the tourists hammer away in Manchester
Berry returned for Merv, “I’m lying in bed watching this, but I can’t sleep.”
Berry’s attack primarily follows the tactics used by the Aussie bowlers, then the batters, but also the field placements.
Many fans argue that Cummins has no plan to fight England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ style of play.
One of them wrote: ‘The coach has some influence on this mess, right? I have never seen an Aussie team play like this, not even when [Michael] Clarke was a captain and he had no cattle, he had a crack.’
“The bowling and fielding tactics are absolutely worthless. I hope the rain comes but they don’t deserve to be saved by it,” another tweeted.
A frustrated fan took issue with Berry’s argument: “It’s funny to see former cricketers say this. But I swear for as long as I’ve watched, including the Darren Berry or Ricky Ponting era, that fast bowlers and captains have persisted in short bowling to follow Enders even when they’re not working. It’s like they’ve all forgotten they were doing the same thing.’
Play on the fifth day will resume at 8:00 PM AEST.
