Former Australian rowing representative Georgia Nesbitt has been admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries during a road cycling event on Friday night in Hobart.

The 30-year-old driver went into an induced coma, but is said to be in stable condition, after the crash during a criteria race.

Nesbitt, an eight-time national champion and world championship silver medalist who was part of the national team at last year’s world titles, received treatment at the scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance.

Nesbitt (pictured) won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships and is an eight-time national champion.

Rowing Australia boss Ian Robson said the sport was rallying around Nesbitt and his family.

“Georgia is one of the most respected athletes in Australian rowing,” Robson said in a statement.

“The entire rowing family and the sporting community at large are thinking of Georgia and her family in the wake of this serious accident and offer their continued support and assistance to her family.”

A qualified lawyer, Nesbitt was appointed to Rowing Tasmania’s board of directors this year.

The Australian rowing team was rocked in 2005 when another beloved former member of the team, Amy Gillett, was killed in a training accident when she was struck by a car after transitioning to cycling.
