Aussie Hollywood icon’s rarely-seen son steps out with her at star-studded charity event in New York… but can you guess who his famous mother is?

An esteemed Australian actress made a rare public appearance with her son at a star-studded event in New York City on Thursday evening.

The 55-year-old is considered one of the best artists of her generation with two Academy Awards, four BAFTAs and four Golden Globes to her name.

She was the first ambassador of the Australian Film Institute and has been a patron of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts since 2001.

She is also patron of the Sydney Film Festival and was co-CEO and artistic director of the Sydney Theater Company from 2008 to 2013.

In her personal life, she has been married to her playwright husband for 27 years, and together they share four children, who are usually kept out of the spotlight.

However, the star made a rare outing with one of her sons in New York this week for a charity event held by the Clooney Foundation for Justice, run by George and Amal Clooney.

They sweetly held hands as they arrived at the New York Public Library together, with her son looking very friendly in a black suit.

The Elizabeth star arrived at the glittering event The Albies with her eldest son Dashiell on her arm.

Cate looked chic in an effortlessly stylish black sequin blouse, which ended at her knee and featured silver embellishments on the left shoulder.

She paired her inner rocker with black leather pants and matching black heels to complete her look.

Keeping accessories to a minimum, Cate wore some finger and ear bling, while she finished her ensemble with a black clutch with gold embellishments.

She also wore a smokey eye makeup palette, a light pink blush and a matching shade for her lip.

Dashiell looked dapper in a dark blue double-breasted suit which he teamed with a pair of black leather shoes.

Cate and Dashiell stood with a galaxy of stars at the Albies, including Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Jimmy Fallon, Donatella Versace and Jon Stewart.

Named after anti-apartheid hero Justice Albie Sachs, the Albies seek to recognize people who defend justice around the world.

In addition to Dashiell, Cate shares two sons Roman, 19, and Ignatius, 16, and daughter Edith, eight, with her longtime husband Andrew Upton.

While Cate has built a hugely successful career as an actress and achieved worldwide fame, Andrew has also achieved great success in theater and film.

The couple have been married for almost thirty years and tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in December 1997 after proposing after three weeks of dating.
