HUNTINGTON BEACH, California — Two people were killed and three others were injured in Independence Day violence in a Southern California coastal city, police said Friday.
A suspect has been arrested after authorities responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in Huntington Beach Thursday night, police said.
The attack occurred in a busy area near downtown, less than two hours after the fireworks had ended, city spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said. Huntington Beach is known as “Surf City USA.”
According to the police, there is no longer any danger to the public.
Few details were available Friday. Authorities described the violence as an “assault with a deadly weapon,” but would not say what type of weapon it was.
An Orange County coroner’s spokesman did not have details Friday about the victims’ fatal injuries. And the mayor and representatives of the district attorney’s office did not respond to a request for comment.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
