AT&T 2022 security breach hits nearly all cellular customers and landline accounts with contact

A security breach in 2022 compromised the data of nearly all of AT&T’s mobile customers, customers of mobile virtual network operators who used AT&T’s wireless network, and landline customers who communicated with those mobile numbers.

A security breach in 2022 compromised nearly all AT’s data&T mobile customers, customers of mobile virtual network operators using AT&Both T’s wireless network and its fixed-line customers communicated with these mobile numbers.

An investigation by the company revealed that the compromised data contained files containing AT&T-registrations of calls and text messages between May 1, 2022 and October 31, 2022.

BEE&T has more than 100 million customers in the US and nearly 2.5 million business accounts.

The company said Friday that it has launched an investigation and is working with cybersecurity experts to understand the nature and extent of the criminal activity.

“The data does not include the content of calls or text messages, personal information such as social security numbers, dates of birth or other personally identifiable information,” AT said&T said Friday.

The compromised data also did not include all the information you would normally see in usage details, such as the time stamp of calls or text messages, the company said. The data did not include customer names, but the AT&T said there are often ways to find the name associated with a specific phone number using publicly available online tools.

BEE&T said it does not believe the data is publicly available at this time.

The compromised data also includes records from January 2, 2023, for a very small number of customers. The records identify the phone numbers of an AT&T or MVNO mobile number communicated with during these periods. For a subset of records, one or more cell site identification number(s) associated with the interactions are also included.

The company continues to cooperate with police and reports that at least one person has been arrested so far.

Shares of AT&Dallas-based T Inc. fell more than 2% before markets opened on Friday.
