Atletico Madrid suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to LaLiga newcomers Las Palmas at the Gran Canaria Stadium on Friday evening.
Diego Simeone’s side drew level on a six-match winning streak in the league and could have edged city rivals Real, who had played a game more.
But the away side were undone by Garcia Pimienta’s confident side, who without Girona would have been hailed as the surprise package of the young season in their first top-flight season in six years.
After a goalless first period, the deadlock was finally broken 51 minutes into the match when Los Amarillos skipper Kirian Rodríguez fired a long drive past Jan Oblak.
Twenty-year-old star Alberto Moleiro registered his first assist but it was the clever dummy of Manchester City loanee Maximo Perrone, 20, who created the space for the shot.

Diego Simeone’s team suffered the second league defeat of the season on Friday evening
The home side doubled their lead in the 75th minute after midfielder Javier Munoz intercepted Mario Hermoso’s sloppy pass into the middle and launched a counter.
Former Barcelona and Sevilla striker Munir laid a pass wide for teammate Benito Ramirez del Toro to run in and score.
Atletico managed to make Las Palmas nervous in the closing minutes thanks to Alvaro Morata’s goal in the 83rd minute. But it proved to be only a consolation for the 2021 LaLiga champions.
The result leaves them in third place after eleven games, three points behind early leaders Real Madrid and Girona.
