Atlético Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen were both eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday night, with Yannick Carrasco missing the chance to win when he saved a 98th-minute penalty.
Diego Simeone’s squad had to beat the German team to have any chance of progressing to the last sixteen of Europe’s biggest league, but had to settle for a point after Carrasco’s miss – with Xabi Alonso’s men giving them feedback earlier.
Carrasco had opened the scoring for Moussa Diaby in the first half and a first goal for loaned Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi turned the game upside down before half-time. Rodrigo de Paul struck just after the break to tie the score – and neither side could force a winner.
