Atalanta defeated Roma and Inter Milan to sign Gianluca Scamacca from West Ham

West Ham confirmed today that Gianluca Scamacca has left the club and joined Atalanta for good.

It comes as the Serie A side have beaten Inter Milan and Roma to their hand, with both sides having previously shown interest in the Italian striker.

Notably, Atalanta sold their striker Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for £72 million last week.

But it appears they acted quickly to secure new reinforcements at the top and permanently signed Scamacca for an undisclosed fee.

West Ham confirmed the news in a club statement earlier today, a year after they signed the 24-year-old from Sassuolo for £30m.

The centre-forward struggled to impress at West Ham with a knee injury notably keeping him out of the team

Since then, the centre-forward has struggled to impress at the London Stadium and in the 12 months since joining he has scored three times in 16 Premier League appearances before a knee injury and a meniscus problem brought his season to an early end.

Fabrizio Romano reported last week that the deal could be worth ‘£21 million plus £4 million in add-ons’.

But at one rack released today, the Premier League outfit said: ‘West Ham United can confirm that Gianluca Scamacca has left the club and joined Atalanta BC.

The 24-year-old has moved permanently to Italy’s Serie A for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-forward spent one season at the London Stadium, scoring eight goals in 27 appearances, including five in the run-up to the UEFA Europa Conference League for the Hammers.

West Ham United would like to thank Gianluca for his efforts and wish him well for his future career.

Meanwhile, he was also revealed by Atalanta in a video posted on YouTube, which showed him arriving at the club’s training ground, signing his new contract and donning the club’s blue and black striped kit.

In the video, according to a translation from YouTube, Scammaca says: ‘I chose the best club to continue where I left off here in Italy and the one that suited my needs perfectly.

“The director and coach Gasperini always put their cards on the table and never hid how much they wanted me and how similar our views were on many subjects.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to playing at Gewiss Stadium to finally feel the fans cheering and celebrating together.”

Atalanta said, “Atalanta BC extends a warm welcome to Gianluca and wishes him the best of luck in his future personal and team endeavors as Nerazzurro.”
