At least ten people dead in horror bus crash in New South Wales

At least 10 people have been killed and 11 others rushed to hospital after a bus crash in New South Wales, in one of Australia’s deadliest road accidents in decades.

According to reports, the bus rolled into a roundabout on Wine Country Drive near the Hunter Expressway exit in Greta.

A gateway to the Hunter Valley, the small town is about 114 miles north of Sydney and 29 miles northwest of Newcastle.

The bus driver, a 58-year-old man, is still alive and has been taken to hospital under police guard for examination, NSW Police said.

Police said 11 passengers had to be airlifted or taken to hospital by ambulance, while 18 others were unharmed.

It is believed the bus may have been carrying guests who had just attended a wedding, Nine News reported.

The accident happened just after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday and a crime scene has been identified, which will be investigated by specialist forensic police and the Crash Investigation Unit.

‘The initial investigations indicate that 10 people have died. 11 people have been transported to hospital by helicopter and road and 18 passengers are unharmed,” New South Wales Police said early Monday morning.

After being called to the scene, police said a “massive emergency response operation had begun involving officers from the Hunter Valley Police District, Police Rescue, Traffic and Highway Patrol, NSW Ambulance paramedics, NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Rural Fire Service and several helicopters for hospital transports’.

Road closures and diversions are expected to remain in effect for some time to come.
