A suspect is in custody and the El Paso courthouse is closed due to an ongoing investigation into a reported shooting that left one person dead.

Earlier today it was reported that a shooting took place outside the El Paso courthouse.

After the shooting, a person was found dead on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound, Colorado Springs Police Department spokesperson Ira Cronin confirmed.

There are also unconfirmed reports of injuries at the scene.

One suspect is currently in custody in connection with the shooting, CSPD said.

The Colorado Springs Police Department announced on X: “CSPD is responding to a shooting at the El Paso County Courthouse. PIO on the way. Media staging takes place at the corner of Tejon and Vermijo. Media should approach from the south” at 12:24 p.m.

They then posted an update at 12:36 PM saying, “This is not an active shooter situation. There is no threat to the community. The court will be closed for the rest of the day. CSPD will provide further updates as needed.”

In an update, CSPD posted: “Once on scene, officers located a deceased individual with apparent gunshot wounds.

“This is being investigated as a homicide, but the El Paso County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

“At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident and not an active shooter incident. There is no threat to the community. There is currently one suspect in custody.”

Many police and first responder vehicles were on the scene in Colorado after the shooting was reported earlier today.

CSPD installed caution tape and fencing to block the public’s view.

Tejon Street between Colorado and Vermijo remains closed for police investigation.

Video from outside the courthouse shows police officers escorting an unidentified woman, who appeared to disappear from the scene in distraught as she sobbed in distress.

Witnesses say the shooting was a domestic violence incident and confirmed at least one person fired shots.

They say the courthouse was evacuated and a crime scene was set up.

A female witness said she heard the shooting was a domestic disturbance between the husband and wife CBS.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department said two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Whether these injuries are the result of gunshots or not is unclear at this time.

A gentleman who was in the court at the time of the alleged shooting said they were all sent to the third floor, where they waited for 15 minutes, he said. KOAA news 5.

The man said it was scary, but he is glad his family is safe.
