At least one person is killed after fuel tanker EXPLODES on Connecticut bridge, halting traffic on I-95 as fire spreads to nearby buildings

A fuel tanker overturning caused a massive fire and one death on Interstate 95 at the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

Emergency services are putting out the fire in Groton, Connecticut, after the vehicle overturned Friday morning.

New London Mayor Michael Passero confirmed that the driver of the tanker was killed. It is unclear what caused the accident.

Dramatic footage showed plumes of smoke rising from the bridge as the fire continued to burn.

It crosses the River Thames and is only a few thousand meters away from the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Department of Transportation has closed the road between exits 86 and 84, closing the south side of the bridge for structural inspection.

Sergeant Joseph Pelchat, New London Police Department said: “Due to a serious car accident on the Gold Star Bridge, both lanes of I-95 are closed and the bridge is closed to traffic. Take into account possible major delays.’

Connecticut State Police also confirmed buildings were on fire under the bridge, with injuries reported, though it’s unclear how serious they are.
