At least 80 people have been injured after a double-decker tour bus collided with a public transit bus at a major New York City intersection.

The FDNY says a Topview NYC tour bus crashed into an MTA bus at 1st Ave and E. 23rd Street around 7 p.m.

Sources told Eyewitness news that the MTA bus had the right of way at the intersection, but that the tour bus ran a red light and collided with the other bus.

Authorities confirmed that 18 people have been taken to hospitals, some with suspected fractures and a further 63 people are being examined.

Deputy Chief of the New York City Fire Department Kevin Murphy said, “A little after 7 a.m., we received a call for a major vehicle accident at the intersection of 223rd and 1st Avenue.

“The first two units arrived and found two buses in what appeared to be a serious accident, complicated by the fact that one of them was a double-decker bus.”

Deputy Chief Paul Hopper commented, “The EMS operation went smoothly.

“We’ve had a few little challenges, the double-decker bus, going through the windows, getting people out.

“There is a significant number of patients, we have currently transported 18 patients – none of them have life-threatening injuries.

“We are evaluating about 63 additional people, both buses appear to be fairly full.

“That number can fluctuate slightly, hopefully no one else will be seriously injured.”

Photos taken at the scene show the damage to both buses, with the tour bus windshield completely obliterated.

People are also being loaded into ambulances by emergency services, while others are visibly injured by the collision.
