At least 14 people injured by roof collapse at home during celebration near Ohio State University

Part of a home collapsed and 14 people were injured near Ohio State University Saturday night when people climbed onto a roof not designed to support much weight, authorities said.

Columbus Division of Fire Battalion Chief Steve Martin said his department received a report of a roof collapse on East 13th Avenue around 7:40 p.m. and found that the roof had collapsed over a porch while the rest of the house remained intact.

“The few people who were trapped, I believe, were probably dislodged,” Martin said. “It was like their leg was trapped under part of the structure and some of the students lifted that off the students. So everyone was kind of out.”

First responders initially found 10 injured and eventually transported 14 accident victims to area hospitals with “various injuries,” but all were in stable condition, Martin said.

“It looks like the roof was overloaded with students,” Martin said, with estimates ranging from 15 to 45 people on a roof “that wasn’t designed to have anyone on it, and it gave way.”

The names of the homeowner or occupants were not readily available.

The house is not on the Ohio State University property. The main campus in Columbus has an enrolled student population of 61,677 for the 2022-2023 school year, according to the university’s website.

People had gathered outside the house after the roof collapsed, an unnamed student told local media, including WSYX.

“There’s just a lot of panic,” said the student. “I saw many people almost covered in black soot.”
