New hands-on tech preview for the upcoming Asus ROG Ally
The edge recently went hands-on with a prototype for the Asus ROG Ally
This was a limited practice, as The Verge’s Sean Hollister was unable to turn the device on or use it for extended periods of time. However, the Asus ROG Ally It is also believed to be heavier due to the larger battery inside. It’s also reportedly thicker at 1.5 inches compared to the original’s 1.27 inches.
Next, we’ll discuss the alleged specs and pricing for the Asus ROG Ally X from hardware leaker MysteryLupin on X (formerly Twitter). The base specs appear to be nearly identical to the first iteration with a reported AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU and 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display. However, there is supposedly a larger 1TB SSD and a whopping 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM for the system.

As for battery life, the new handheld is rumored to have an eight-hour lifespan. As a frame of reference, the Asus ROG Ally currently has a 512 GB SSD and 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM, clocked at 6400 MHz. That means the next system could have double the storage space and significantly faster memory on board. The US price is rumored to be $700 (about £550, AU$1,050).
The existing Asus ROG Ally technically has a battery life of around six hours, but demanding games can seriously drain the battery. It’s not a problem unique to Asus’ device, as the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go also have this issue, but a larger battery could alleviate the problem significantly.
It still seems like iteration over innovation
From what we can gather from the hands-on notes and hardware leaks, it looks like the Asus ROG Ally X will be more of a stopgap between the current handheld and a true successor. However, we expected that based on previous rumors, and if the device is to have double the storage and 24 GB of RAM, there’s no doubt that it will be a superior experience to the original (although there won’t be any really exciting upgrades).
We’ve seen hardware revisions take place in the handheld gaming scene over the past year, most notably with the Steam Deck OLED arriving about a year after the original. This new model also increased storage capacity to 1TB, but had a vastly improved and significantly brighter 1,000 nits display with HDR that’s yet to be beaten.
Either way, all will be revealed in a few weeks with the Asus ROG Ally Go can deflect remains to be seen. seen. Or indeed, whether the new device will give Nintendo anything to do in the field of portable gaming, for that matter.
We will of course keep you informed, but these first signs are promising enough.
