Emi Martínez has been heavily criticized for his behavior since Argentina’s World Cup victory.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery has said he will speak to the goalkeeper when he returns to the team.

Emery said: “I want to talk to him when he comes here next week, but I’m thinking more about his performance and his win than his celebration.”

‘The celebration is for the fans, with great emotions. It’s really not a good time as a coach to identify why.

I prefer to focus on how he performed and how he is going to win with us afterwards. I’m going to talk to him because I want to control him in that too: his emotions.

We have to have values, we have to focus on behavior when we are together and with opposition players.

The goalkeeper has made a number of jokes at the expense of Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé.

‘In 90 percent of the cases we can talk about very good things and be very proud of him, for his performance, for his victory. It’s about more than small details like celebrations.’

Emery has granted Martinez extra time after Qatar 2022, meaning he will miss the Boxing Day clash with Liverpool, but should be available for the trip to Tottenham on New Year’s Day.

“I said before the World Cup that each player would have a minimum of seven days off after the tournament and a maximum of 12,” Emery explained. “So I hope that Emiliano comes on Thursday and is available for Tottenham.”

Villa supporters plan to show their appreciation for Martinez with a banner at the Holte End congratulating him on becoming world champion.
