Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich PLAYER RATINGS: Unai Emery’s King of Chaos Jhon Duran produces a night to remember, Emiliano Martinez provides more brilliance but same old problems blight Harry Kane
Aston Villa secured a historic victory on the return of Champions League football at Villa Park on Wednesday evening, beating German giants Bayern Munich 1-0.
Jhon Duran proved he is the king of chaos for Unai Emery when he scored after coming off the bench again and netted late as his side held on for a shock win, but how did he judge that?
Emiliano Martinez, meanwhile, was the star of the show as he came to the rescue late on, and his performance earned him a solid rating from TOM Collomosse of Mail Sport at Villa Park.
As for Villa’s opponents, it was the same old story for Harry Kane – who became frustrated in the match – and his assessment reflects that.
Read on to see how every player involved in Thursday’s European match fared in our match ratings.

Bayern huffed and puffed but failed to break Villa’s defense on a tough night for the German club
Aston Villa (4-4-2)
Emiliano Martinez – 8.5
Had little to do in the first half until he leapt to the right to knock down Michael Olise’s swerving effort and later made even better stops from Serge Gnabry and Kane.
Ezri Konsa-8
Against such a difficult customer in Kingsley Coman, Konsa showed what a good one-on-one defender he is, even if he doesn’t like playing as a right-back.
Diego Carlos – 6.5
Not many centre-backs would choose to face Kane over Liam Delap, but he had an easier time against the England captain than he did against the Ipswich man last Sunday.
Pau Torres – 7.5
Disappointed because his goal was disallowed for offside, the Spaniard is enjoying the European stage, where his sometimes physical vulnerability is rarely exposed. Great ball for Duran’s goal.
Lucas Digne-7
The left-back had a good start in both attack and defence, although Villa’s high line means no margin for error and there were a few hairy moments.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the star of the show for Villa with two big stops late on
Pau Torres thought he had given Villa the lead in the first half, but his goal was disallowed for offside
Jaden Philogene – 7.5
Emery showed enormous confidence by starting him above Leon Bailey, and Philogene repaid him with a performance of great maturity.
Amadou Onana – 6.5
Had his hands on his knees at one point in the first half after putting in a huge amount of work in the center of midfield.
Youri Tielemans – 7.5
Villa’s best player in the opening weeks of this season, the Belgian, put in another performance, one brilliant spin away from Joshua Kimmich as the highlight.
Jacob Ramsey-6
Eliminated due to offside in the action, which resulted in Torres’ attack being disallowed for offside and having to come off injured halfway through the first half.
Morgan Rogers-7
He was inaccurate during the opening exchanges but still grew into the game and soon tested Bayern by picking up the ball deep and charging at their back four.
Ollie Watkins-6.5
He made two mistakes from Dayot Upamecano, meaning the Bayern man should have received two bookings. Made sure he took the few chances he had to cause problems for the visitors.
Jacob Ramsey switched off in the build-up to the disallowed goal before leaving early due to injury
Ollie Watkins caused problems for the visitors as he took the lead in the Champions League again
Substitutes
Leon Bailey (for Ramsey 27) – 5
Gave the ball away twice after coming on and was brutally taken off the pitch just 33 minutes later.
Ian Maatsen (for Bailey, 60) – 6
Sent by Uani Emery to play for Digne and strengthen Villa’s left side.
Ross Barkley (for Onana, 60) – 6
Onana had made a huge change and seemed to be struggling when the Englishman replaced him.
Jhon Duran (for Watkins, 70) – 7.5
In the presence of the future king, it was another night to remember for Villa’s own King of Chaos.
Manager
Unai Emery-7
He instructed his team to let Bayern have the ball for most of the match and make quick breaks when they got the ball back. It almost worked.
Duran is Villa’s own King of Chaos and once again supplied from the substitutes’ bench
Manager Unai Emery once again showed his magic touch in Europe, this time with Aston Villa
Bayern Munich (3-1-3-3)
Manuel Neuer-5
One dodgy pass went straight to Digne and the Villa fans urged their man to shoot from 70 yards. All at sea for Torres’ disallowed goal and nowhere to be seen for Duran’s.
Joshua Kimmich – 7.5
Villa could not get to grips with his passing or movement in the early stages and he remains one of the smartest players in the European game.
Dayot Upamecano-6
Struggled to deal with Watkins and was fortunate not to be sent off, somehow escaping a booking for dragging England forward while trying to race clear.
Kim Minjae – 6.5
Crucial jump at the far post to prevent Watkins from putting Villa ahead. Solid in defence, but perhaps not the ball-playing centre-back Vincent Kompany needs for this style of play.
Manuel Neuer was all set for Villa’s disallowed goal and nowhere to be seen for the goal that did stand
Despite finishing on the losing side, Joshua Kimmich showed why he’s one of the smartest players in the game
Aleksandar Pavlović – 6.5
He had to connect the defense and midfield when Bayern had the ball and protect his backline when they didn’t. He generally did a competent job.
Konrad Laimer-7
Showed great energy on Bayern’s right and his direct running often had Villa kicking back, although he was less confident when asked to defend.
Michael Olise – 6.5
The former Crystal Palace player found himself on the fringes of the game for most of the game, although he came close to putting Bayern ahead just before half-time.
Alfonso Davies – 6.5
Tried to combine with Coman in the first half, but Konsa and Philogene did well. Had little trouble going the other way.
Michael Olise was on the edge for most of the match, but came close to taking the lead with his team
Serge Gnabry frustrated Kane as he tried to beat Martinez from a tight angle as the England captain waited
Serge Gnabry – 5.5
As Kane waited for the tap-in, he tried to beat Martinez from a tight angle and shot into the crowd. Thwarted again by the Argentinian star in the end.
Harry Kane-5.5
Expected Torres and Carlos to cause more problems than him.
Kingsley Coman-5.5
Could never get past Konsa and was often forced inside, where he also experienced little joy. Addicted to Musiala during the break.
Kane had hoped to have caused Diego Carlos and Pau Torres more problems than in his homeland
Substitutes
Jamal Musiala (for Coman, 46) – 6
Surprisingly left out of the starting XI, he tried to give Bayern something extra in an attacking midfield role.
Leroy Sane (for Olise, 67) – 6
The former Manchester City man was more of a direct player than Olise and gave Digne and Maatsen plenty to think about.
Joao Palhinha (for Pavlović, 76) – 6
Fulham’s summer signing was asked to carry out the same tasks as Pavlovic.
Mathys Tel (for Gnabry, 86)
Leon Goretzka (for Kim, 86)
Vincent Kompany’s team plays fantastic football, but looks shaky at the back, especially at set pieces
Manager
Vincent Kompany-6
His team are playing fantastic football but look shaky at the back, especially when it comes to set pieces, and this could prevent them from going all the way.
