Ashley Young says Gareth Southgate and Harry Maguire deserve more respect from England fans ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Young said the criticism Southgate has received is “bulls**t” as he believes England have a chance to “win” the tournament under the Three Lions boss.

Young also described the criticism Maguire has received as ‘borderline bullying’, but insisted the United defender could ‘deal with it’ as he has a ‘strong character’.

Speak against The sun, Young said: ‘Something special is coming out of this England team. The country must stand behind them.

Get behind every player. Don’t name them. Get behind them all to go out and win this tournament. From the moment Gareth took the helm, he has made a difference. These players will be more than ready.

“With the way the European Championship went, I give us every chance to go to the tournament and win it. Gareth Southgate’s criticism is downright ridiculous. It’s bulls**t.

Young said the criticism Southgate (above) has received from fans is “bulls**t.”

“Because he didn’t get a team to the last Nations League final, people think he should be criticized.

‘When you go to a tournament, you naturally want to win matches. But Gareth has totally changed what it’s like to be with England.’

Young went on to discuss Maguire and the frosty relationship he has with the England fans after not performing at Manchester United.

Maguire has been booed on several occasions. The most recent time came in the run-up to the clash between England and Germany in September.

The United defender was jeered by England fans when his name was read out over the tannoy at Wembley Stadium.

England fans also booed Maguire before and during their 3-0 win over the Ivory Coast in March.

Young said of Maguire: ‘You get criticized for being captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world. But the criticism he receives goes too far.

“He can play well for England and he gets booed. He can play well for United and he gets booed. It’s borderline bullying. But he has a strong character and can handle it.’
