Ashely began, “I thought I’d go into detail about Ada’s birth. It’s still the absolute best day of my life, but like I said, it wasn’t without complications, so I want to add a little trigger warning.
“I opted for an elective C-section and everything felt so wonderful and controlled, just what I needed after my first delivery.
“It felt so surreal to go into the operating room knowing that we would meet her in a few minutes. It felt so overwhelming that I cried tears of happiness as I listened to my playlist.
“We were told to meet her in a few minutes if we wanted to put on our pre-birth song.
‘The anesthetist sat behind me and kept telling me exactly what was going on. So when things got complicated, she calmly kept telling me step by step. It helped me stay calm because it empowered me to know what was happening and when.
“They knew I had an anterior placenta, but it was lower than they thought, so she was stuck underneath. I found out later that the chord was right around her neck. As a result, it took more time and pulling, and I lost a little more blood.
“Ada was born with the help of tweezers. They had to take her away and I can’t tell you how relieved I was when I heard her cry.
“She kept crying until they brought her to me and the moment they put her on my chest she stopped. She knew her mom. She knew she was home.’

“I felt that instant love at first sight I had heard about. I didn’t feel it with Alf – it came gradually later. Maybe because I was slightly traumatized from birth? But anyway, it’s like my heart just burst right out of my chest and grew and never went back.”
“Alf came to visit in the afternoon and I remember thinking I never wanted that day to end. If I could relive it every day, I would.
‘I wanted to share it because I was so hoping that my first birth would be positive. And I was so worried about doing it again. I have my positive story.
She concluded, “I know it’s C-section month and I want to say I don’t feel guilty about my choice of birth. I don’t feel like I was deprived of a birth because it was beautiful and perfect. And it helped me finish my last one. 04.03.23- the day we met Ada.’
