He said: ‘One day my partner [Safiyya] saw a bump on her stomach and there was a bruise on it. When we called, they told us to come in right away. They took Azaylia’s blood.

‘They told us it was AMR leukemia, it was very aggressive. She is at high risk of this disease taking her life and there is a low risk of being able to cure it.

‘They told us that on the spot. We were transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and that was the rest of my life.

‘I went from feeling like I had everything I ever wanted to having my whole life turned upside down. I broke down. I couldn’t function, I had difficulty getting up, speaking.’

Ashley and Safiyya had planned to travel to Singapore with Azaylia for specialist leukemia treatment, but doctors told them she was too ill to make the trip.

Ashley recalled: ‘The day the consultant came in and said, Azalyia’s tumors are coming back, she now has tumors on her stomach, her kidney, her spleen and her brain and she won’t be able to fly anymore. We can’t do anything about it.

‘The radiotherapy was too harsh, it would have killed her. At that point they said there was nothing more they could do.

“I used to hope that my daughter could beat cancer and then I got to the point where my hope came: when she passes away, it will be peaceful and she can be in our arms.

The father told MailOnline: ‘We remain friends and we are co-parenting. We have a very good relationship, so it will stay that way.

It was really wonderful to get along, not amicably, but so good, even better, we both have Aliyas’ best interests at heart.

‘We both have love and respect for each other. And we both just want to be the best parents we can. And don’t just enjoy our son, but above all let us enjoy our lives and life.

‘So we do all kinds of things. It’s very comfortable. It’s very easy. And we make the best decisions based on our son, so great.”
