A father who reportedly never had a driver’s license has been charged again in connection with a horrific crash that killed two teenagers.
Police allege that Nicholas Thew, 28, was driving a grey Ford sedan at 45km/h in excess of the 50km/h limit on Maxwells Ave in Ashcroft in Sydney’s south-west on the morning of November 6, 2023.
Images from the crash site show the car veering onto the sidewalk and hitting a tree and a utility pole shortly before 11 a.m. The impact split the car in two.
Two teenage passengers, aged 13 and 14, were pronounced dead at the scene.
A 23-year-old passenger was also injured in the crash, which police said was caused by Thew’s negligence and dangerous driving.
According to police, Thew managed to drag himself from the mangled wreckage and was captured on camera fleeing the scene.
He remained on the run for 24 hours before turning himself in to police the next day.
The 28-year-old was charged with nine offences, including two counts of seriously dangerous driving causing death, two counts of failing to stop and render assistance after a collision causing death and driving without a licence.

Court documents on Wednesday revealed that Thew is now facing a 10th charge.
The latest charge involves a second count of negligent driving resulting in death involving one of the teenagers killed in the crash.
The Sadleir man had previously been charged with reckless driving causing death in connection with the death of the other teenager.
He did not contest any of the ten charges in court.
His lawyer Julian Mufale told the court he has “hired an expert” to prepare a report for his client’s defence, but that this “will not be ready until the end of September”.
He asked the court to adjourn the case until the report was completed.
Magistrate Peter Thompson agreed, noting that the report “will be crucial to the negotiations.”

Thew will remain in custody until he appears in court again at the end of September.
According to police, he never had a driver’s license and caused the accident by driving dangerously and at high speed.
Police said he knew the impact of the crash would kill his two teenage passengers, but he did not stop to help them.
Instead, it appears that CCTV footage from the area shows the 28-year-old fleeing the scene of the accident on foot.
