Notorious former private tennis star Ash Barty raised eyebrows when she appeared on Sunrise in a final interview before giving birth on Tuesday.
The retired three-time Grand Slam winner, 27, who is expecting her first child in a few weeks with husband Garry Kissick, gave Mark Beretta a pretty firm answer when he asked about the sex of her baby.
The pregnant Ash was so firm that presenter David ‘Kochie’ Koch came up with a theory after the chat aired and his co-host Natalie Barr remarked to Mark that she had ‘knocked him back a bit’.
“Do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl?” Mark asked during the chat, presumably hoping for a colorful answer.
“No,” Ash answered simply.

‘It is a surprise?’ he added.
“Yes,” Ash continued.
However, the retired sports star opened up about how she’s feeling during her pregnancy, saying she’s “feeling great.”

‘Feel good. Exciting times are coming, of course, but it’s been nice to do some really cool stuff and keep working and stay stimulated in the lead up to it,” she said.
“It’s been good, I’ve been very lucky, but I’m looking forward to it,” she added.
She added that she does not plan to return to tennis once she gives birth, saying she is “happy to move on to other things.”
“She kind of hit you back,” Natalie told Mark after the call aired.
“That’s what I like about Ash… but she does it in a nice way,” Mark said.

“She was very firm on the gender, maybe a little too firm,” Kochie mused.
“I think she might know… do a gender reveal with different colored tennis balls,” he added.
Ash announced the happy news of her pregnancy in January on Instagram by sharing a photo of her Border Collie sitting next to a pair of baby shoes.
2023 will be the best year yet. We are so excited for our new adventure,” she wrote.
Many of Ash’s celebrity sports friends left congratulations, including runner Nedd Brockmann and tennis players Johanna Konta and Priscilla Hon.
Ash married her long-term boyfriend Garry in a private ceremony at an undisclosed location in Queensland last July.
The guest list for their wedding included a handful of fellow tennis stars, including Pat Rafter, Casey Dellacqua and Alicia Molik.
The Australian tennis star met her husband at Brooklands Golf Club in Queensland in 2016 during a round of golf, and they’ve been together ever since.
Despite being one of the best tennis players in the world, Ash offers little insight into her world outside the sport – which she retired from last year at the age of 26.
Known for being notoriously private about her personal life and relationship, she opened up about Garry in an interview with Vogue.
“He’s extremely patient with me, and when we met he didn’t know much about tennis,” said Ash.
“He’s kind of thrown in at the deep end to understand what the tour is like and how much we’re apart… [But] he is the best person to have around in terms of quitting tennis and being able to bring fun and laughter.
“I certainly wouldn’t want to share this journey with anyone else.”
