Ascent of Ashes is a harsh survival sim born out of a RimWorld mod

Developer Vivid Storm has released a new gameplay trailer Ascent of ashthe company’s X-Com meets RimWorld colony simulator, in action.

Ascent of ash is a post-apocalyptic game that puts the player in charge of managing a community of settlers under constant siege from raiders, aliens, and other forces. And that means that the player must protect all the colonists under his care. Which means you need to build a settlement that can support the population And fend off external threats. And That means you must also strike back by sending your soldiers on expeditions.

Vivid Storm was born of a popular RimWorld fashion, Combat expanded, who completely overhauled the game’s combat. Instead of a percentage-based shooting system based on the pawn’s stat, Combat Extended added a ballistic shooting model, rebalanced the game’s weapons and armor, and made a host of other balancing changes. Ascent of ash takes those changes even further and evolves into its own game.

Ascent of ash forces players to be very careful with battles, which play out in real time. You can pause at any time to contemplate the battlefield, which could be against simple villains like raiders… or hyper-intelligent alien predators. It only takes one or two shots to shoot a settler. Stressful! Thankfully, it seems there are some relaxing elements to the game as well. Settlers will have to grow their own food and build their own barracks.

I’m definitely interested in learning more about this game, which is due out later this year. Ascent of ash also hosts the coolest pig I’ve ever seen in my lifewho seems unconcerned about the robots or robbers outside his little green field.
