Saudi Arabia has sentenced three men to death for refusing to leave their homes to make way for a futuristic £440 billion megacity that will host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

The news comes the same week that Newcastle fans celebrated the one-year anniversary of the club’s takeover by the state-backed and state-run Public Investment Fund.

The new megacity, Neom, was awarded the Asian Winter Games on Tuesday, and the venue is not expected to be built until 2026. The award of the Games has already received fierce criticism from Greenpeace, among others.

Trojena, the city of Neom, is a planned mountain resort to be completed by 2026.

The future tourist resort will include the Gulf’s first-ever open-air ski resort, a man-made freshwater lake, nature reserve and is expected to be powered by renewable energy.

The Asian Winter Games include skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey and figure skating events with a total of 47 events, 28 of which are on snow and ten on ice.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has an 80 percent stake in Newcastle.

Since the takeover, there have been significant changes at Newcastle, with Eddie Howe appointed as manager, while major purchases have been made for the big bucks, such as Alexander Isak and Sven Botman.

Newcastle, who are currently seventh in the Premier League, are expected to move on for the foreseeable future if they want to challenge the incumbent Big Six.
