As many as 22 sheriff’s recruits were injured, five of whom were in critical condition, after their crew was hit by a wrong-way driver in California on Wednesday morning.

Chad Sourbeer, a battalion chief with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, told me ABC 7 that between 40 and 50 recruits were out for a morning run in the Mills Avenue and Trumball Street area of Whittier, California, at about 6:25 a.m. when a driver plowed into the training platoon.

Five of those recruits are already in critical condition, with four others suffering from more moderate injuries.

Aerial images of KTLA showed that a gray SUV appeared to have crashed into a post on the nearby sidewalk and suffered extensive front-end damage.

Police confirmed that the driver has undergone a sobriety test and has been arrested. The results of the sobriety test are currently unknown.

“The hardest part is finding every victim,” retired LA City Fire Department Chief Fire Chief Rich Godinez said. CBS Los Angeles. “There are red, yellow, and green sails that are used by first responders to categorize the casualties.”

He said the red sails are for those who have to go to the hospital first.

“First responders will contact hospitals to direct each casualty to different hospitals,” Godinez said.

Patients were reportedly taken to several hospitals, including St. Francis Medical Center and LAC+USC Medical Center.

FOS 11 reports that the recruits attended the Sheriff’s Training Academy and the Regional Services Center about a mile and a half from the crash site.

The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.
