There are just four days to go until the highly anticipated final episode of Gavin and Stacey, which will see fans bid an emotional farewell to the much-loved comedy, 17 years after it first hit screens.

The critically acclaimed series follows the lives of main characters Gavin (Matthew Horne) from Essex and Stacey (Joanna Page) from South Wales, documenting key points in their long-distance relationship and events that bring the two families together.

Gavin and Stacey first aired on BBC Three in 2007 and ran for twenty episodes over the course of three series.

Fans were left wanting more when the show’s previous festive special ended with Nessa (Ruth Jones) declaring her love for Smithy (James Corden) and proposing to him, but his answer was not revealed.

Now they hope the finale will answer that all-important question, and shed some light on what happened during the famous fishing trip.

Will Smithy and Nessa FINALLY end up together?

At the climax of the final Christmas episode in 2019, Nessa got down on one knee to propose to Smithy, but viewers never got to hear his answer.

The pair had an on-again, off-again relationship during the series after several unplanned one-night stands led to their son, Neil, having a baby.

In the series finale, which caught up with the characters ten years after the previous episode, it was revealed that they were successfully co-parenting their son.

And as the family gathered in Barry for the festivities, the episode ended with Nessa down on one knee and the episode ended immediately after she asked, “Marry me?”

Speaking about Nessa’s shock proposal, she told the Mirror in 2019: ‘It’s quite difficult to show her soft side. When I’m down on one knee, it’s clear what’s going on.

‘When I put my hand on my heart and, like Nessa, said, ‘I love you. No, I do, I love you with all my heart,’ I really meant it to James.”

Will the couple finally live their happy lives and accept that they are meant to be together?

What happened to Smithy’s girlfriend?

On Christmas Day, special fans met Smithy’s new girlfriend Sonia and it was clear she didn’t quite fit in with the Shipman and West’s crazy world.

Sonia hastily left Barry after being unimpressed with Gavin and Stacey’s family, leading Nessa to tell Smithy that she is in love with him.

However, Smithy had already sent an engagement ring to her grandparents’ house before the disastrous Christmas… and she’ll be there to pick it up.

Will this affect Smithy’s response to Nessa? Will he have to withdraw his proposal to Sonia? It can all get quite messy.

Speaking on the Table Manners podcast in 2021, when asked if he thought his character was gay or not, Rob said: “There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to say anything because I think it’s in the minds of the audience should sit. .

“Obviously they wrote it… It’s not ambiguous, right? I’d be surprised if he wasn’t.

‘But I might wonder if he never did anything with it. They never said to me, it’s just what’s in the script. But I mean, you know, the way he stares at Larry Lamb, at Mick.
