As Barbra Streisand sparks outrage with ‘rude’ remark about Melissa McCartney’s weight, a look at other stars who fell foul of her acid tongue

Barbra Streisand left fans reeling on Monday after publicly criticizing Melissa McCarthy over her weight loss with a “rude comment.”

The Broadway legend, 82, couldn’t resist commenting on a photo of the actress, 53, posing with boyfriend Adam Shankman, 59, on Sunday CTG’s The Gala 2024 at the Ahmanson Theater.

The comedian – whose weight has fluctuated over the years – showed off her newly slimmed down figure in a stylish mint green dress and blazer, prompting Barbra to post: ‘Give him my regards. Did you bring Ozempic?’

The EGOT-winning entertainer was quickly on the receiving end of dozens of responses highlighting the nature of her question, and while she did not respond to the response, Barbra quietly deleted her comment.

But with a reputation for speaking her mind, this isn’t the only time Barbra has unknowingly caused offense…

Opra

In 2003, Barbra appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show wearing a white turtleneck and walking her white dog Sammie around the studio.

After a musical performance where Barbara used a white microphone, Oprah called her out for even matching the microphone to her outfit and dog.

She said, “I just want to say this… I own this studio, I’ve been here for I don’t know how many years. I’ve never seen a white microphone before.’

Barbra replied, “It’s actually off-white to match my off-white sweater. I like simplicity and monochrome frames.’

“So you got the microphone sprayed?” Oprah asked again in an encounter that comedian Kathy Griffin said she spent weeks eating with Oprah in her book Official Book Club Selection.

Donald Trump

In 2018, Barbra claimed that Donald Trump “got to her” when she resorted to comfort food to cope with the current state of politics.

She then added to Australia’s Stellar magazine that the “lying” president left her feeling “kind of depressed” as she stayed up until the early hours after eating chocolate and ice cream.

“Trump has lied from the beginning, and I simply honor the truth – in my work, in my life, I love the truth. I think it’s so powerful,” Barbra said.

“To me, the truth is the essence of living in a democracy and I think what offends me so much is that Trump cares so little about it because he keeps lying and making things up day in and day out, you know? ‘

She continued, “I’m telling you, when the news gets really bad, like last night when I was listening to (the president), I had to have two coffee ice cream cones…I had to have two. I thought of three.

‘Sometimes if I do that and eat chocolate before I go to bed, I can’t sleep until five or six in the morning. I sleep very little.’

Larry Kramer

Barbra and Larry were embroiled in a saga for years over the television adaptation of his play The Normal Heart.

Barbra optioned the rights to The Normal Heart in 1986, but apparently couldn’t raise the money to make the project happen.

A leaked 2012 email from Larry to Barbra highlighted his frustration, when he told her she “didn’t have the same burning passion to make it as you always claim.”

Still, Barbra defended herself, insisting, “Larry continued to speak out against me in the press.

‘But I think it’s unfair to keep blaming me for the film not being made.

‘I worked on it for 25 years, unpaid. Larry had the rights for fifteen years, but he couldn’t get it made either. Those are the facts.’

Bradley Cooper

When Bradley’s 2018 remake of her 1976 film A Star Is Born was released, Barbra couldn’t help but express her disappointment with the end result.

She confessed that she was initially on board before learning about Bradley’s involvement.

Barbra explained, “When I first heard it was going to happen again, it was going to be Will Smith and Beyoncé, and I thought, that’s interesting.

‘Making it really different, a different kind of music, integrated actors, I thought that was a great idea.

So I was surprised to see how similar it was to the version I made in 1976…

‘For me it’s not so much about success as about originality.’
