Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard strangely marked James Tarkowski, who scored the only goal in Saturday’s midday game.
Everton picked up just their fourth win of the season as they came out of the Premier League relegation zone.
James Tarkowski, who was managed by new boss Sean Dyche at Burnley headed the only goal of the game on the hour mark to put a dent in the Gunners’ title hopes.
The 30-year-old defender got past Odegaard at the far post to guide the ball to the far post on the hour mark.
It was exactly what Sean Dyche expected in his first game in charge of the Toffees, who have now beaten Arsenal at home in three successive seasons.
The Toffees managed to keep Arsenal at bay, with the midfield trio of Idrissa Gana Gueye, Amadou Onana and Abdoulaye Doucoure proving too physical for the visitors.
It is the first defeat for Mikel Arteta’s team since September, when they lost 3-1 to Manchester United.
Manchester City will have a chance to close the gap at the top to three points when they travel to Tottenham on Sunday.
