Marc Overmars has been banned from football in the Netherlands for a year after admitting sending inappropriate messages to female colleagues during his time at Ajax.

The Arsenal legend was director of football at the Dutch side before leaving the club in February 2022 following the reports which took place ‘over an extended period’.

Overmars, who played for Ajax, Barcelona and the Netherlands during his legendary playing career, said at the time that he was ‘ashamed’ of his ‘unacceptable behaviour’.

As reported by The AthleticsOvermars has been ordered by the Dutch Sports Tribunal (ISR) to refrain from ‘carrying out any position whatsoever’ at any organization affiliated with the Dutch Football Association for a period of two years – one of which is suspended.

However, the ban does not affect his position at Belgian Royal Antwerp, where he started working a month after leaving Ajax.

However, the ISR has claimed that the suspension could be referred to global governing body FIFA for further review.

His current side Royal Antwerp have not yet commented on the matter.

Overmars said last year when he left Ajax: ‘I’m ashamed. Last week I was confronted with messages about my behavior. And how this came across to others.

‘Unfortunately I didn’t realize that I was crossing the line with this, but that was made clear to me in recent days. I suddenly felt enormous pressure. I’m sorry.

‘Certainly, for someone in my position, this behavior is unacceptable. I see that now too. But it’s too late. I see no other option than to leave Ajax.

‘This also has a major impact on my private situation. That’s why I ask everyone to leave me and my family alone.’

Overmars was part of the Arsenal team that won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998, during a three-year spell with the Gunners.
