Former Arsenal star Gilberto Silva has given his old club some advice when it comes to signing a midfielder in the January transfer window.

The Gunners have been hit by a number of injuries in the opening months of the season and fans are certainly expecting some action in the coming period.

Thomas Partey has played just a handful of games and is not expected to be back until the new year, while Gabriel Jesus has just returned to fitness after a second spell on the sidelines.

Mail Sport reported earlier this month that Partey’s ongoing injuries are of particular concern and that a new midfielder is the priority for the Gunners.

“I heard they might be looking for midfielders, especially because Partey was getting injured every now and then,” Silva said Spiegelsport at the Web Summit in Lisbon, promoting his new hate-free football social media platform, Striver.

“I’m not sure it’s going to happen 100 percent, but obviously they have to be aware that this is a very short time frame and very specific.

‘You have to be like a fisherman sometimes, to get the right player who you really need, who will help you win games and who will be useful for the rest of the season. Also to improve the way you play.

‘It’s not about sometimes taking a player with you because you need it [them]. Edu often speaks with people there. They work hard to have the data and know what they think is good for the club in terms of objectives.

‘The market is also very competitive, sometimes you have to be quick and not miss the opportunity.’
