Arsenal ‘have got to go on a Man City type run’ to win the Premier League, Jamie Redknapp insists – as pundit criticises Gunners for failing to put pressure on Liverpool in Brighton draw

  • They are five points behind Liverpool, who have two games left to play, in the league

Jamie Redknapp has criticized Arsenal for their performance against Brighton, insisting the Gunners need to ‘make a Man City-style run’ to win the Premier League.

Arsenal dropped more points against the Seagulls on Saturday evening as they drew 1-1 with Amex, with Ethan Nwaneri’s second Premier League goal coming as Joao Pedro scored a late equalizer.

The gap to Liverpool is now five points, but Arne Slot’s men still have two games in hand. One is against Manchester United on Sunday, the other against local rival Everton.

Against Brighton, Arsenal again struggled to create chances from open play. They have become synonymous in recent weeks with relying on set pieces to score goals.

But that didn’t happen on Saturday and Arsenal are banking on Liverpool dropping points if they want to finally end their 21-year Premier League title run.

Redknapp, who previously played for Liverpool, did not comment on his analysis of the match during Sky Sports’ coverage. He urged Arsenal to do better and stressed that results must improve quickly.

“If Liverpool win the title race tomorrow they will go eight points clear with a game in hand,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. ‘I said before the game that there will be twists and turns, but if Arsenal keep performing like this there will be no more twists.

‘They were poor tonight. Second half only one shot on target. A draw costs them. If you want to win the title you have to go out and put pressure on Liverpool. That was a very bad night for them. Lack of quality, lack of deception.

‘Arsenal have to run a sort of Man City race to win the title. They need to look at what Man City have done in recent years, chasing them and chasing them. Each time, Man City took three points and put the pressure on Arsenal. But can Arsenal do it?’

City have become synonymous with late-season runs, which have often led to them winning the Premier League title. Last year they remained unbeaten in their last 23 league games, winning 18 of them to claim their fourth title in a row.

The season before, when they won the Treble, they were unbeaten in 16, before losing to Brentford on the final day and winning 14.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been criticized for their struggles with open play all year, and it is an issue that has received even more attention since Saka’s injury last month.

They scored one against Ipswich, three against Brentford and one against Brighton without Saka, but did beat Crystal Palace 5-1 on the day he was injured.

“They have to play better than they are,” Redknapp continued. “That’s the actual fact.

‘They find it difficult. A few weeks ago, Everton at home (0-0 draw), you think: “that’s an absolute banker for them”. They haven’t been able to unlock teams like we normally expect them to. They have to find other ways without Bukayo Saka.”
