Arsenal ‘have gone BACKWARDS’ as an attacking team and ‘have not been enjoyable to watch,’ Jamie Redknapp claims – as Gunners continue to chase Liverpool in Premier League title race
Arsenal ‘have gone backwards from an attacking point of view’, claims Jamie Redknapp.
The Gunners are chasing Liverpool in the Premier League title race, currently six points behind the Reds, who have a game in hand, after both sides drew their respective games this weekend.
Much has been made of Arsenal’s alleged struggles in front of goal this season. They are the third top scorer in the Premier League with 39 goals this season, but nine of those have come from corners.
In Bukayo Saka’s absence, the Gunners scored one against Ipswich, three against Crystal Palace and one against Brighton. The perception is that they have difficulty with open play creatively.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been second in the Premier League behind Manchester City for the past two years and could have pounced on City’s struggles this season. Yet it is Liverpool who lead the pack.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg match with Newcastle, Redknapp urged Arsenal to improve their game – a game he believes is in decline.
“I think the reason is I definitely felt like this was their year,” Redknapp said. ‘If you look at how Manchester City have really struggled, they probably thought they would be seven or eight points ahead, with Manchester City in the distance.
‘But Liverpool obviously surprised us all. but they have to find something. I feel like they’ve regressed to some extent in their performance as an attacking team since last year and the year before that and even the year before that.
‘They have to find rhythm in their game. This year it wasn’t fun to watch. They come to life when there is a set piece. there must be more to it than that.’
More to follow.
