Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner completes £7 million move to Nottingham Forest on a four-year contract

  • The 29-year-old has joined Forest in a transfer that could be worth up to £10 million
  • Turner said it was a “big challenge and a big step in my career.”

American goalkeeper Matt Turner has completed his move from Arsenal to Nottingham Forest.

Turner, 29, has signed a four-year contract with the City Ground in a deal that could be worth up to £10 million.

With Arsenal approaching the arrival of David Raya from Brentford, Turner would have further limited his first-team opportunities had he stayed in North London.

“It’s a great challenge and a great step in my career,” said Turner, who moved from the New England Revolution to Arsenal last June and played in their Europa League campaign.

“The manager and back room staff, everything about the club has a little sparkle to it. It felt good from the start and I’m glad it worked out.’

Arsenal reached a £30 million deal on Tuesday to sign Spaniard Raya from Brentford.

Raya has already reached personal terms with Arsenal and will undergo his medical with the club this week before being unveiled as a new player.

He will rival England shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale for the number one spot at Arsenal as the new Premier League season prepares to kick off.

The 29-year-old Turner made seven cup appearances for Arsenal, but a move to Forest would allow him to play more with a World Cup at home in 2026 on the horizon.

The former New England Revolution goaltender – who made 102 MLS appearances – is the USMNT’s No. 1 goaltender and most recently played for his country in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

He was the penalty shootout hero against Canada in the quarter-finals, saving two penalties before the U.S. was eliminated by Panama in the semi-finals.

Forest’s goalkeeping situation is currently unclear, with both Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas returning to their parent clubs – Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain – after loan spells during the 2022/23 season.

Wayne Hennessey and Turner’s fellow USMNT goalkeeper Ethan Horvath remain on the squad list, but the team are eyeing upgrades as they head into their second Premier League season.
