Arsenal defender Pablo Mari is to undergo a medical in Italy ahead of finalising his £4million move to Monza.

He will join the newly-promoted Serie A outfit – owned by Silvio Burlusconi – as their 19th signing of the summer, with the ambitious club hoping that strength in numbers will save them from an immediate return to Serie B.

Although initially impressing at the Emirates Stadium, Mari became something of an outcast in north London of late due to recent arrivals Ben White and William Saliba.

Mari joined Arsenal initially on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2020, before in the summer of the same year on a permanent basis for £5.4m

After the arrivals of Gabriel Magalhaes, White and Saliba – who has now returned from a third successive loan spell – the 28-year-old finds himself a fair distance from the starting squad, with the like of Rob Holding also ahead of him.

After only 14 Premier League appearances for the Gunners he now looks set for a return to Italy as Arteta continues to cut the deadwood from his squad.

The centre-back had been keen on a return to Serie A having spent the second half of last season on loan at Udinese, who did not have an option to buy included in the deal.

Hellas Verona were also interested in the former Flamengo centre-back, who was previously said to have rejected a move to Fenerbahce and a reunion with Jorge Jesus.

However the Burlusconi-owned side pipped them to the Spaniard’s signature, having also fended off interest from Udinese, with just a medical keeping them from officially winning the race for the defender.

The centre-back – who turns 29 later this month – had two years remaining on his contract at the Emirates Stadium, having played a total of 22 games for the north London club.
