Arsenal celebrate St Totteringham’s Day for first time in SEVEN seasons after draw with Southampton

Arsenal celebrate St Totteringham’s Day for the first time in SEVEN seasons after the Gunners’ draw at Southampton means Tottenham can no longer mathematically finish above their bitter North London rivals

  • Spurs have finished above their league rivals since the 2015/16 season
  • However, the draw gives Mikel Arteta’s team a 22-point lead over Tottenham Hotspur
  • Should Spurs win all their remaining games, they can only finish on 74 points

Arsenal celebrated St. Totteringham’s Day for the first time in seven seasons as the Gunners drew 3–3 against Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

Spurs have finished above their bitter rivals in the Premier League standings since the 2015/16 season.

But the draw puts Mikel Arteta’s side 22 points ahead of Spurs, meaning Tottenham can no longer mathematically finish above Arsenal.

Should Tottenham win all their remaining seven games, Cristian Stellini’s men can only finish on 74 points.

It is believed that the concept was introduced in 2002 when it appeared on the Arsenal fan website ‘Arseweb’. However, it only became known in 2010.

Since then, the term ‘St Totteringham’s Day’ has often been used in connection with the rivalry in North London.

In 2016, Arsenal finished second after their 4-0 win in the last game of the season against Aston Villa.

On the same day, Spurs needed a win to ensure they finished above Arsène Wenger’s side.

But they eventually lost 5–1 in Newcastle to finish third, one point behind the Gunners.

Arsenal also secured their place in next season’s Champions League with the draw against the Saints, dashing their hopes of winning the Premier League title.

Arteta’s men are five points ahead of top rivals Manchester City who begin their titanic battle at the Etihad on Wednesday.
