Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hit back at criticism from former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – stressing that his current squad is more ‘hardworking’ than in previous years.
Aubameyang left the Emirates Stadium in February for Barcelona, his contract being broken for not being in and around the first team after Arteta dropped his then skipper for returning late from an agreed break.
His stay in Spain lasted just seven months before returning to the Premier League with Chelsea and in recent days a video has surfaced in which the Gabon attacker betrays Arteta’s management skills.

Chelsea forward Aubameyang had slapped Arteta, claiming he can’t handle ‘big players’
“To manage big characters or big players, he (Arteta) can’t handle it,” Aubameyang said in an interview with A Jewelers.
“He (Arteta) needs some young players, they don’t say anything, they listen.”
Since the video was first shared, Aubameyang took to social media to explain his comments and wrote part of a tweet that read: ‘Know there is a video that was shot just after I arrived at Barcelona.
“I still had a lot of bad feelings in me at the time – Arsenal are doing great things this season and I wish all my old boys the best, just not on November 6.”
Arteta was asked about Aubameyang’s comments on the eve of Arsenal’s Europa League clash with Bodo/Glimt.
“People are free to discuss what they want,” he told reporters in Norway.
Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy by Arteta after several disciplinary issues
“I’ve never been in a better locker room (than this season) – more fun, working harder, better relationship between staff and players and it’s an absolute pleasure as a coach to be part of this group.”
The Gunners top the Premier League after beating Liverpool 3-2 on Sunday, a game in which Gabriel Jesus won the penalty converted by Bukayo Saka to earn the three points.
The Brazilian forward has been in good form since coming over from Manchester City in the summer, but has been left home for Thursday’s game in the Arctic Circle.
“With everything he’s been through over the past few weeks, we naturally thought it was better that he stayed home,” explains Arteta.
“What we think is how we’re going to win the game, that’s it. How we win every three games, in different conditions, in different contexts, in different weather and in different competitions and that’s the only way we approach the game.
“Eventually we will have XI players on that pitch, our selection is based on how we think we are going to win the game – that’s it.”
The 33-year-old’s contract was canceled by the Gunners and he moved to Barcelona
