Fans of Arnott’s Ginger Nut cookies who thought the product tasted different depending on where in Australia it was consumed were always right, as a little-known secret about the afternoon tea favorite was revealed.

A recent Facebook post titled “Bet You Didn’t Know Arnott’s Ginger Nuts Are Different in Every State” caused a stir, with many unaware that the popular cookie differed across the country.

Daily Mail Australia contacted Arnott’s to verify the claims and it turns out to be true – there are actually four different types of biscuits in Australia.

‘The Ginger Nut story is… true! Arnott’s Biscuits makes four different versions of the same Ginger Nut cookie, depending on the state you live in,” said an Arnott’s spokesperson.

From color, texture and flavor to package size, labeling and ingredients, Ginger Nut cookies differ slightly depending on the state you live in.

“While the ingredients are similar, the amount of each ingredient varies as does the time the cookie is baked,” said an Arnott spokesperson.

“We kept the four different recipes because they were created to suit the tastes of Arnott’s consumers in different states across the country.”

The reason for the variations goes back six decades when Arnott’s had bakeries in most states, each with its own local recipe.

When the brand went national, Arnott’s decided to use the NSW Ginger Nut recipe nationwide, but they encountered resistance from consumers in other states.

“When Arnott’s became a national company around this time, we initially tried to supply the NSW Ginger Nut nationally, but Aussies in every state made it clear that there is simply no substitute for their Ginger Nut, the version they grew up with and love. kept,” said an Arnott spokesperson.

“To this day, Arnott’s still has four different versions.”

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ARNOTT’S GINGERNUTS COOKIES

NSW/ACT: This Ginger Nut is the thickest and hardest, and best for dipping into a cup of tea.

QLD: Thin, sweet and darker in color – more like a gingerbread style cookie.

VIC/TAS: The Ginger Nuts in the Southern States are bigger, softer, and sweeter, and are the closest thing to traditional overseas ginger cookies.

SA/WA/NT: This variety is similar to its Victorian counterpart, but sweeter.

“We often get calls from people who have bought a package while traveling interstate, asking if we’ve changed the prescription,” Arnott’s spokesperson said.

“And every now and then, in border communities, a cookie from another state sneaks into a local grocery store.”

Arnott’s said the Queensland variety is their best-selling cookie, followed by the New South Wales/ACT variety.
