Arnold Schwarzenegger admits regret for ‘stupid’ comment he made to Eunice Kennedy Shriver when he met future wife Maria Shriver in 1977

Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his forthcoming documentary, expressed regret over a “stupid” comment he made to Eunice Kennedy Shriver when he first met her daughter, Maria Shriver.

The 75-year-old actor in his three-part docuseries Arnold opened up about first meeting Maria, 67, in 1977, according to an article by People.

After being asked to appear at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Tennis Tournament, Arnold was introduced to Maria by her late mother Eunice at a party.

‘[Eunice] came up to me and said, ‘It’s so good to have you here. This is my daughter Maria Shriver, by the way,” Arnold recalled.

“Then later she said, ‘My daughter is really crazy about you,'” and I said, “Well, your daughter has a really nice ass. I have to tell you,” said Arnold.

Arnold admitted his faux pas in the Netflix documentary.

‘How stupid. I don’t even know why I said it,’ Arnold said.

The Terminator star added, “I really fell in love with Maria, not because she was a Kennedy, but because she had an extraordinary personality. I saw that little rebel in her. I wanted to escape Austria, she wanted to escape too. That was the beginning of Maria and I.’

Arnold and Maria later married in 1986 and have children Katherine, Christina, Patrick and Christopher.

The former California governor also has a son Joseph Baena, 25, from his affair with former domestic worker Mildred Baena.

Maria filed for divorce in July 2011 citing “irreconcilable differences” after learning of the affair.

Arnold recalled in the documentary the moment when he told Maria about his infidelity and fathering a love child.

Maria was not interviewed in the documentary that premieres on Netflix on Wednesday.

During a 2011 marriage counseling session, the counselor had stated at the time, “Today Maria wants to be very specific about something,” he revealed. “She wants to know if you’re Joseph’s father.”

Arnold recalled, “I thought my heart stopped. And then I told the truth. ‘Yes, Mary. Joseph is my son.’ She was clearly devastated by that.’

He also shared in the documentary that Maria “freaked out” when he announced his plans to run for governor of California.

In the first episode of the project, the Hollywood icon also spoke about what it was like for him and his late brother Meinhard to grow up as the son of a decorated Nazi soldier, who returned to Austria a broken man from the war and went to unleash abuse on his family.

Arnold premieres on Netflix on Wednesday.
