Liverpool face an £8.59 million bill to deal with Dutch cup winners Feyenoord if they decide to step up their efforts to sign manager Arne Slot.

The 45-year-old Dutchman is now a strong candidate for the soon-to-be vacant job at Anfield when Jurgen Klopp leaves in the summer.

Feyenoord would like to approve a departure, but would need 10 million euros for this.

Slot won the Dutch Cup this weekend with a 1-0 victory in the final over NEC Breda and also led the Rotterdam team to a national title in 2022/23, only their second championship victory since the turn of the century.

Sources say the Dutch club is becoming increasingly frustrated as Slot’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, continually offers him to other clubs. The manager would have a significant amount of power over transfers at Feyenoord and the club was willing to give him what he demanded.

Slot is likely to bring his right-hand man Sipke Hulshoff to his next club, with Liverpool needing a massive rebuild of their coaching department after a number of high-profile members of Klopp’s trusted squad tried to follow him out the exit.

No formal or direct talks have yet taken place between Liverpool and Slot or Feyenoord, and the Dutch club were only informed of the growing interest in their manager earlier this week.

Klopp announced at the end of January that he would be leaving the club after almost nine years at the helm and he now has just five games left on Merseyside, including tomorrow’s trip through Stanley Park to Everton and Goodison Park.
