The Feyenoord manager has agreed a deal to succeed Klopp as head coach of the Reds from the start of next season, with only formalities and an official announcement standing in the way of a deal.
Klopp, who will leave Liverpool this month after nine glorious years, said on Friday he would like to speak to his successor, but only if Slot feels comfortable doing so.
And Slot says that it is normal for this unofficial transfer to take place. “I think it is normal that when you go to a new club, you contact the current coach,” the 45-year-old said last night after Feyenoord’s 5-0 win over PEC Zwolle in De Kuip.
‘I also did that at Feyenoord. It’s normal, with all the knowledge someone has from working at the club for a few years, or nine in this case, that you would contact them. But other than that I know his assistant Pep Lijnders quite well. If there is an official confirmation, it would be strange if I didn’t call him.’
